Pleased to see that Paul French, author and expert on Chinese history, recommends my translation of Wei Hui’s “Shanghai Baby” as one of five must-read Shanghai novels — right up there with Malraux’s “Man’s Fate!” I translated the former back at the turn of the 21st century:
