Chinese Academics Ask: 非洲文学离我们有多远?

In a recently published essay at The Paper (澎湃新闻) two Chinese academics — one studying in Germany and another in South Africa — ask how a Chinese should go about getting acquainted with contemporary African literature.

Alain Mabanckou’s French-language novel — Mémoires de porc-épic 《豪猪回忆录》— recently translated into Chinese.

One suggestion, in case you can’t read indigenous languages such as Swahili, Hausa, Amharic or Shona, or colonial languages such as English, French or Portuguese, would be to consult 非洲文学:中文译本 African Writing in Chinese Translation, a bilingual mini-database featuring links to 220 translated works by 84 African writers.

It appears that these two academics (袁明清 and 张丽方) didn’t. But never mind.

Here is the opening to their essay, 冷战时期的亚非文学运动,与非洲文学的中译史:

当中国与非洲各国都已经不再是革命的代表,反帝反殖民联盟的修辞也已在当下失效,文学还能够再次为我们提供关于“亚非”、关于 “第三世界”、关于 “全球南方” 的想象吗?我们现如今是如何又该如何进入非洲文学?

《世界文学》期刊2017年第1期推出非洲短篇小说特辑,选译来自乌干达、肯尼亚、埃及及尼日利亚四国、五位作家的作品,特辑后对当代非洲文学述评中写道, “上世纪五六十年代,‘亚非拉’三个字让遥远的非洲走进中国……成功地占据了五零后和六零后的儿时记忆 ”,然而半个多世纪过去了,“ 我们与非洲却渐行渐远。除了三四位诺贝尔文学奖得主,我们对于那个辽阔大陆上的文学所知甚少……”。

对于非洲文学在中国的境遇,与 “所知甚少”同样呼吁我们思考的是这些“五零后和六零后的儿时记忆”在当代叙述中的缺席,上世纪中叶这场轰轰烈烈的亚非文学翻译运动在中国翻译文学史中鲜有提及,亚非作家会议也没有成为文学史书写的对象,而今公共话语中的“非洲” 与当初那个“憨厚、朴实且亲近”的形象也已相去甚远。在现象层面不断重返60年代的今日,在中非关系进入新的地缘政治格局的当下,也许正是我们重新展开这段历史的契机。
